The Plant Health Specialist plays a vital role in maintaining the health and quality of green goods—including trees, shrubs, and perennials—at our nursery and distribution yard. This role ensures plants are properly monitored, treated, and cared for to meet quality standards and minimize loss. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of horticulture, pest/disease identification, and proper care practices, with a proactive mindset and attention to detail.

Responsibilites

Monitoring & Scouting

  • Regularly inspect incoming and existing plant material for signs of pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, or watering stress.
  • Document and report findings with recommendations for treatment, care, or removal.

Treatment & Care

  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and other treatments according to best practices and safety regulations.
  • Prune, water, or reposition plants as needed to improve health and appearance.
  • Preventive care programs based on seasonal changes and plant needs.

Inventory Support

  • Assist with plant unloading, tagging, and proper placement to minimize damage and stress.
  • Collaborate with yard and sales teams to ensure product is sellable and customer-ready.

Records & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate records of plant health issues, treatments applied, and inventory affected.
  • Follow all state and federal pesticide application regulations; maintain certification.

Team & Training

  • Provide support and guidance to seasonal team members on plant care best practices.
  • Coordinate with vendors, growers, and sales reps to stay up-to-date on product care protocols.

Qualifications

  • Experience in horticulture, nursery management, or greenhouse operations.
  • Knowledge of plant diseases, pests, and treatment methods (trees, shrubs, and perennials common to the Midwest).
  • Ability to safely apply chemical treatments (MDARD Pesticide Applicator License a plus).
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Physically capable of inspecting stock and working in an outdoor environment.

Preferred Attributes

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, or related field.
  • Familiarity with West Michigan plant materials and regional climate conditions.
  • Experience with wholesale or B2B distribution yards is a bonus.

Job Schedule/Compensation

This is a full-time position. Pay based on experience.

• Full time position M-F with some weekend work during the busy season
