We’re hearing from members that they had issues this year getting utilities marked, and marked correctly, in a timely manner. We reached out directly to MISS DIG to find out why their service isn’t working properly and we were surprised to learn that MISS DIG’s function is to be a notification center. MISS DIG does not go out and mark utilities. Rather, they notify the U.S. Infrastructure Crop (USIC), who is hired by the utility companies, and USIC goes out and does the marking.
USIC and the utilities are facing the same challenges that we and all other industries are facing, a shortage of manpower. We learned that more tickets are being placed than utilities have the manpower to go out and locate.
So, what are our options once you go through the process and are still waiting for your area to be marked? We were given the list of USIC Michigan Districts and USIC contacts with their cell phones and you are encouraged to call the Manager in your District to let them know.
