Changing rules due to fraudulent claims were implemented by the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) late last year and are affecting the payment of unemployment benefits with members across the state. The biggest change is with the steps you need to take to verify your identity. According to the UIA you must now either “upload in your MiWAM account or fax a picture of you with your Driver's License or government issued ID, could also include your birth certificate or social security card.” The other option is to have Michigan Works! take pictures of you with your Driver's License and Social Security card and upload it for you. If you do this through Michigan Works! we’ve now learned that the UIA is also requiring pictures of you with the back of both cards. Those that only had the front side uploaded are now seeing long delays in receiving their benefits.
We understand the frustration and concern our member firms and their employees are experiencing and we are working with the UIA to get resolution on your claims. In addition, we’ve also heard that some members have received specialized help by contacting their individual Legislators and asking them to speak to the UIA on their behalf.
